ARTIST STATMENTS

My work is about seeing the unseen – the invisible presence which exists in our minds and surrounds all objects, experiences, and memories. Having spent my childhood on a small ancestral farm amidst the beautiful, yet polluted environment and post-industrial decay of rural West Virginia, I developed a keen interest in being part of and observing natural systems, time and the process of life and death, and an aesthetic sensibility synthesizing the organic and the machine.
I focus on the quiescent potential of materials and environments to be more and different than how they are currently perceived and understood; fulfilling an innate desire to explore, discover, share, and think. Drawing attention to physiological systems of vision, thought, and memory, I am interested in making conspicuous our abbreviated and abstracted understanding of reality, time, and identity. Initially arousing involuntary attention through democratic formal means, the content of my work then enters the cognitive as one actively relates this experience with those already held in the mind as memory. At this juncture of feeling and thought meaning is produced. By delaying this process through reorganizing the fabric of the everyday into the unusual, a heightened sense of the present is felt. Ultimately, one walks away more self aware and delighted in everyday visual ephemera and the experience of being a living breathing being.

London-based graphic designer Joseph Egan together with his colleagues from Chelsea College of Art & Design created this eye-deceiving anamorphic typography installation as part of the assessment for his Foundation Degree course.

Anamorphic Typography
An exploration of the potential and existing relationship between architecture and typography

This project evolved out of a brief we had set ourselves as part of the assessment for our Foundation Degree course at Chelsea College of Art & Design. From initially looking into the existing and possible relationship between graphic design and architecture we discovered the process of anamorphosis as used by the fine artist Felice Varini.
After researching and testing the process in our studio we began to search for an ideal architectural space within our college buildings to execute our installation in. When planning an anamorphic installation is it important to consider that to maximise the fracturing of the design, it is best to try and touch as many plains as possible. We eventually decided to carry out our installation in a corridor of our college (as shown in the images) using the long walls to maximise the distortion of the letterforms. All of our work is site specific and we spend as long as possible discussing a choosing the perfect architectural locations for our works.
We initially chose the phrase "It's more than just print" to challenge the conventional idea that graphic design can only be realised in 2 dimensions (a poster, business card or magazine etc). The phrase is also a comment on the technique as when viewed from the right viewpoint, the design looks as though it is flat on a 2D plain.
For our second installation we chose the phrase “it’s a point of view” as a comment on the process of anamorphosis where the design only becomes fully legible when viewed from a specific point of view. This piece was also a comment on the the subjective nature of good design, given it’s placement in our end of year exhibition featuring works by all of our peers.
Our work encourages the viewer to walk into and around typography, an immersive experience considering that their usual relationship with type would normally be realised on a two dimensional surface be it printed or computerised. Being able to appreciate it physically painted onto walls of buildings which the viewers are used to interacting with every day draws attention to the beauty of typography and at same time highlighting the architectural forms that it adorns.

ARTIST STATEMENT
Currently, I use ceramics as my material in my method of expression, incorporating various decorative styles, patterns, and symbolic forms as my principal axis in creating my works.
The decorative styles and forms I allude to and incorporate in my works each contain a story based on historical backgrounds and ideas, myths, and allegories.　Their existence in the present age makes us feel many things,; adoration, some sort of romantic emotions, a sense of unfruitfulness and languor from their excessiveness and vulgarity.
And on the other hand, they make us feel tranquility and awe that can almost be described as religious, as well as an image as an object of worship.
By citing such images, I feel I am able to express an - atmosphere- that is a part of the complex world in this age.
In fact, the several decorative styles and forms I cite simultaneously hold divine and vulgar meaning in the present age, having an irrational quality that contradict each other, which I feel express an important aspect in the contemporary age in which we live.
Also, the technique of ceramics has a tradition that has been a part of the history of decoration over a long time, and I feel the delicateness and fragile tension of the substantial material well express my concept.

Twister Restaurant, Kiev

Twister is a new restaurant concept proposed for a space in Kiev, the capital of Ukraine. The design team, Sergey Makhno and Vasily Butenko also of Kiev, work on residential and commercial interiors and architecture but we are particularly fascinated by their furniture and their sculptural approach to interiors. We wrote about one of their office projects a while ago.

In Twister, the duo has captured the upward pull of a tornado in the main two-storey dining area with furnishings that seem to hover above the floor on their super-slim legs, with light fixtures resembling rain drops, and with massive sculptural columns that are in fact crow's-nest balconies.

The bar area is yet another iteration of a bird’s nest with walls covered with thatched sticks and with cushy seats resembling pods or cones. The warm-toned color palette conveys a sense of calm throughout, in spite of the avian connotations and air-borne allusions. - Tuija Seipell.

Japan's Namba Parks Has an 8 Level Roof Garden

When we think about shopping malls, the typical image that comes to mind is a bland series of interconnected boxes with the food court probably being the most exciting part. Well Namba Parks, a massive retail and office compund in Osaka, Japan, totally blasts away the boring stereotype of what a mall is supposed to look like. Built in the footprint of the old Osaka baseball stadium, the awesome development, which was completed in 2003 by the Jerde Partnership, has an eight level rooftop garden that spans several city blocks and features tree groves, rock clusters, cliffs and canyons, lawns, streams, waterfalls, ponds and even space to grow veggies!

Namba Parks was conceived when Osaka Stadium closed down, presenting a great redevelopment opportunity for a new commercial district right next to the Namba Train Station, which is just one stop away from Kansai Airport. Since it’s one of the first places that visitors to the city might see, owner Nankai Electric Railway asked the Jerde Partnership to envision the new development as a gateway that would redefine Osaka’s identity. Jerde designed Namba Parks as a huge green space and an oasis amidst Osaka‘s dense urban streets.

The entire development includes a 30-story office tower and adjacent mall, but what really makes Namba Parks stand out is its rooftop park that gradually ascends eight levels and gives passers-through the feeling that they are actually standing high on a mountaintop in nature when they’re actually right in the middle of the city. Right below the park, a gradiated “canyon” carves a path through the mall, as they stroll past shops, entertainment spots and dining venues. Different flavors of restaurants (Japanese, Korean, Italian, etc.) can be found on the 6th floor, and shops are located on the 2nd through 5th floors. There are also terraces located both on the rooftop and amidst the canyons, an amphitheater for live shows, and space for small personal vegetable gardens and wagon shops.

Drawing with Thread - Debbie Smyth

I'm a big fan of UK textile artist Debbie Smyth's work and eagerly awaited her latest project 'Drawing with Thread'. Using just thread and pins I find it fascinating to watch how Debbie shows both the process and progress for creating her distinctive plotting, pinning and threading drawing style. 'Drawing with Thread' is at the Shire Hall Gallery, Stafford until 23 April.

This blog is no stranger to wooden or, indeed, bamboo bicycles. The "Splinter Bike" by English craftsman Michael Thompson, however, is a very different animal. Barring a touch of glue and lick of paint, this beast is made entirely from wooden parts—not a nail, screw, nut or bolt in sight...not even a chain or rubber tyres.

Apparently the fruit of a friendly wager, Michael now hopes his creation will set a land-speed record for wooden bikes, raising money for charity Shelter Box, with friend James Tully at the salvaged broom-handle handle bars; perched on the wooden saddle.

The Splinter Bike's biggest achievement—making this a real engineering marvel—has to be the 128-tooth cog that replaces the need for a drivechain.

The bike has yet to be tested, owing to a difficulty in finding a suitably smooth surface to ride it on—but we'll be sure to keep you updated on how the bike holds up. Be sure to check out Michael's blog to see the bike coming together in the workshop.

I’ve blogged about his intimate design and his cool Panton DIY chair. Slovakian designer Peter Jakubik has now created these great soft, oh, and dead pets.

I think they are awesome. We all know the problem of sitting in your couch with cold feet being too lazy to get up and find some socks. Then we put a pillow on top of the feet to warm them. But the pillow keeps on falling of and it doesn’t warm the feet enough.

Crocodiles Inspire Kids To Discover - Tel Aviv, Israel

There are no alligators outside this cool kindergarten, located in Ramat Gan, near Tel Aviv, Israel. But inside, there definitely are alligators and they are white.
White alligators may not be the first things that would come to mind if you were asked to design a kindergarten environment. But Tel-Aviv-based designer Sarit Shani Hay, creator of fun kindergarten spaces, doesn’t think like the rest of us.

She took her inspiration from the surroundings of the kindergarten — an agricultural training farm with lush vegetable gardens and purposeful functionality.
In her projects, Hay combines sleek functionality with unexpected whimsy, typified here by the white crocs that function as lounge chairs for the little ones.

Other focal points include a large mushroom that serves as a house, a hiding place and a play station; and a wooden house with windows and a red roof; and shelving units in the shape of trees. All of these have a functional purpose and look inviting and cool, but the main benefit is their inspiration for play and interaction. Rather than just sitting there like any furniture, these pieces are also playthings that invite the children to discover and experiment.

The space has two rooms for two age groups: one for 1.5-2.5 year-olds, and the other for 2.5-3.5 year-olds. A large block of white closets divides the two spaces and hides the kids mattresses and contains each kid’s own drawer.

And, if you are like us and would like one of those gators, you will need to be in touch with Hay, because she both designed and made them by hand. Apparently, they are available in three sizes – we imagine them to be tiny-ish, plain scary and horrendous. - Tuija Seipell

Sophie Dalla Rosa’s portfolio of knitted objects deals mostly in natural shapes; aping the contours of stones or coral. My favorites are these strange flora — alien specimens in wool, kept under glass in the study of some interstellar naturalist.

House in Hidaka by Suppose Design Office

Earth is banked up to the ground floor windows of this residence in Hidaka, Japan, by Japanese architects Suppose Design Office.

Long counters down either side of the living space form small landings for the steps leading outside and upstairs.

The ground floor is wrapped in glazing, while the overhanging upper floor, supported on stone pillars, provides more privacy.

House in Hidaka

This is a house that is engaging nature to a part of a life in the dwelling through a wave of a ground from outside to the inside.

The site is placed in Saitama–ken, Japan, where it has a rich nature environment with beautiful scenery of a hill. The client wanted their house that is open to the nature environment and also has a depth in the space.

The ground is covering the half of the 1st floor of the dwelling. Because of the light hill around the house, residents could feel the connection with the surrounding environment closer as if they are living in the nature. To protect the building from the pressure of soil of the hill, the foundation of the house was built up and wrapping the half part of the wall at the ground level.

The half walls have multiple functions such as a table, shelves, and stools. In other words, residents could find their own way to use the space as if they are finding their own, comfortable space in nature like a hill with fine sunlight or under the trees with soft light through leaves.

Usually, there is a separation between a house and its surrounding environment to protect its privacy.

For the house, we tried to create neutral line between inside and outside in engaging the landscape into the house. We hope the architecture could create an environment that has more interactive relationship between nature and a life of residents.

The Installations Of Myeombeom Kim

Combining man-made and natural objects Korean artist Myeombeom Kim’s installations portray scenes and objects of surreal beauty. My favorite may be the stag pictured above, it’s antlers sprouting into expansive tree branches, giving the impression that the animal is rooted to the ground, the tree having tunneled its way up, through the deer’s body. Likewise, his light bulbs are just as clever, their filaments having been replaced with flowers and twigs, turning them into miniature, hanging terrariums; disparate objects suspended in a state of tranquil co-existence.
